Explore Bangkok, Thailand

While other people spend time doing what they like with their partners, families and friends; sometimes it just seems better to DO THINGS SOLO. Once in a while you have to think of something you can do by yourself and meet new people along the way who share the same interest.

May of 2016 I have thought of doing a solo trip. I started searching online about the best places where you can travel solo. Thailand was always on the top of the list. Am I ready to explore a foreign country alone? No! It is scary but I had to try. I remember someone said that you have to step out of your comfort zone to try things that you think you couldn’t do so that when you grow old you have amazing stories to tell your grandchildren. So I decided to book the cheapest flight to Bangkok and a good Hotel to stay in.

TIP:   Use your credit card when booking your flight so you can earn miles.

June 4, 2016 I landed in Bangkok. I didn’t have an itinerary. I always go wherever my feet take me.

I started roaming around the streets of Bangkok carrying my Nikon camera and captured some great photos.

I kept walking and tried some of their amazing food. Mango and coconut ice cream are the best! These will keep you from coming back to Thailand. And I’m not kidding!

Then I met a Tuk Tuk driver and he said that I should try to take a river boat ride. He said that I look like Thai  so I would pay only half of the normal price. Apparently, white people pay more. I got easily convinced as if I was talking to a really good salesman. I took the Tuk Tuk to the riverside.

The driver introduced me to a tour representative and asked me to pay 1500 THB. They said that other tourists pay around 3000 THB. So I paid then rode the boat.

It was an hour boat ride. If you ask me if I would recommend it to anyone, I’d say No. It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t good either. (But if you have plenty of time and nothing else to do while in Thailand maybe you should). I got off the boat and it’s the place where some small ships are docked. Suddenly there a sign board that got my attention. The board says: “River Boat Ride costs 700 THB”. That’s when I realized that I got conned. I was laughing at myself! I honestly think that it’s part of travelling alone. At least I learned something and now I have the chance to share it to people who read this. We should always look around and don’t be afraid to ask other people. We don’t necessarily need to trust every single one but there is no harm in asking.

P.S. Whenever I go to another country, I always make sure I try their local beer and coffee. You should, too!

  1. I was “conned” in Sri Lanka, too. 5000 Sri Lankan Rupees for a Tuk Tuk tour which brought me to MOSQUES! As if I’m not done with mosques in Abu Dhabi already! I felt so betrayed after I wanted to kill the driver! Those, I believe, are the perks of travelling alone….but the adventure was worth it!
